Fire And Rain

  • Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, 'I'm going fishing.' They told him, 'We are also coming with you.' They immediately went out, and entered into the boat. That night, they caught nothing. John 21:2 WEB

As the disciples stood there together, Peter said: 'I am going fishing.' What he meant was that he was going to return to his old way of life. Peter, Andrew his brother, and James and John were all fishermen when Jesus called them (Mark 1:18). Jesus told them: 'Follow me and I will make you fishers of men' and they became His closest disciples. Peter walked on the water with Jesus (Matthew 14:28). James and John were so zealous for Jesus that He called them: 'Sons of thunder' (Mark 3:17).

Only a few days before, they saw their life and future so differently, so much brighter. They had walked closely with Jesus every day, the Messiah, the Anointed One, God with us. The disciples just knew that Jesus would soon be the next king, that they would be ruling with Him, and it would involve thrones and fine clothes. Now it seemed that God had let them all down, and Jesus Himself had been crucified. Their faith was in shambles.

The disciples at that point were no longer in tune with the plan of God. They could not see past the pain, the hurt, the natural circumstances that had occurred. They felt defeated, though everything had happened exactly as God had planned it. They had walked in the fire, now they walked in the rain.

Sometimes the fire inside of us gets wet. We were expecting this, but instead got that. We planned this, but it did not work out as we planned. When this happens, we need to be sure that our plans and vision, are still the same as His. That is all that matters. Giving up and returning to the past is not the answer. Correcting our course is: 'OK Lord, I am not sure why that happened, but here I am. Now what?'

God can relight the fire if you can set aside the disappointment. Trust Him, especially when you do not understand why this is happening. Do not become lukewarm because you thought you knew best, but God didn't listen. Do not say: 'Well I tried it, and it didn't work for me. I am going back to what I know how to do.' Do not begin to think that the trip is over, when you are only at an intersection. Get your new direction, and continue the journey.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I don't understand what happened, but I choose to trust You. Give me a clear vision of Your plans and help me to align my will with Yours. I want, what You want, in the name of Jesus Christ I pray.

If we could only see our life as a road map, in life we come to many intersections. God may want us to keep going forward, but the left turn seems to be the way to us. I have found that even if we make the left and it does not turn out to be the right direction, God will find us. He will get us back on the right road if we allow Him. Prayer is so important, and a willingness to submit.

I believe that is absolutely the case, Jim, which is why I don't worry too much about if we make boo-boos in life. If we are hearing and doing the best we can, He will get us back on track!

Thank you for this message. Disappointments come too often in our lives, but our Lord has bigger plans for us. Sometimes we want a clue what's He has in store for us, but we need to continually trust Him. We're in this together, with our Lord always with us.

Blessings to you all!

Yes...agree.  Nothing I want to go back to.  To say ..."Now what"!   Yes!!  Forgot about the water in basement I found the other day after a rain storm.  I thought also it might be the rain because we have gotten water in our basement often.  Over 100 year old house.  Concrete floor but not water proofed.  We just accepted it like our other neighbor's.  Push bromide...dry it out with fan and good to go.  But tonight before he left for work my husband came up from the basement  today he thinks our water heater may be the problem.  Oh boy..just what we need.  He will be back on Tues.  Soo we prayed to the Lord about it.  Financially tight is light to say.  Thinking on Peter and disciples in their thinking I really believe God knows and have no desire to get bent out mind ...just say Lord ...what do we do?  He owns the cattle on the hills...everything around us incl us He made! It is up to You Lord!  Hen we are weak He is strong and He loves that!
