Word Mastery

  • Set a watch, Yahweh, before my mouth. Keep the door of my lips. Psalms 141:3 WEB

David prayed that the Lord would set a guard over his mouth, to keep him from saying things that he should not. James said 'If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well' (James 3:3). If you can control your tongue, then you can control the rest of your body, and he warned us that blessing and cursing should not flow out of the same source.

In the Old Testament (Numbers 14:28) the Lord said 'what I have heard you say, I will do to you.' In the New Testament (Matthew 12:36) Jesus said 'I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.'

So we have an unchanging pattern throughout time that what comes out of your mouth, directly affects your life and your circumstances. It was covered in the Old Testament, and in the New Testament.

A mentor of mine used to say: "Words unspoken, you are their master. Words once spoken, you are their slave.'

Do not speak bad things over your life, family, or those around you. Say good things about them, or say nothing at all. Stay positive in your speech. When you are speaking today, listen to the words that you are saying. Pray that God sets a guard over your mouth and makes you aware of your words.

Prayer: Heavenly Father I pray that You set a guard over my lips and let me hear what comes out of my mouth. Forgive me of the things that I have said wrong and cleanse my heart, for I know out of the abundance of my heart, my mouth speaks. Help me be a positive influence on those around me, in the name of Jesus Christ I pray.

When David recorded his prayer, spoken word was the main method of communication. I think now we need to amend the prayer with "every word that flows from our fingers", too. We've all seen countless instances of careless words being posted on social media.

This is my prayer: Guard all my methods of communication.

Thank you for this message, I stand convicted! This is a major problem that I have, reacting & speaking too quickly and being too impulsive! This is an area in my life that needs alot of work! But I'm not alone, all I have to do is to listen to the guidance of the Hl. Spirit, and choose my words wisely. I can do it, but only with God's help!!!

Thank you again
