A Time for Everything

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.” Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8

I used to wonder why bad things happen to good people as I have heard this many times in my lifetime. We all go along life having our good and bad days or what we think are bad days until something so profound happens whether it is in our own personal life or in our community, we have to just stop and think, WHY? So much happens in this world that none of us can explain. Abuse, neglect, untimely deaths, fatal car accidents, cancer and so on, on, on….

We, as humans, are all very unique in how we handle such tragedies. Some of us may get angry and want revenge, some may be so heartbroken all we can do is cry, and others may completely ignore the entire situation and go on living as if nothing ever happened whiles others are just unable to move past the tragedy. Life is what it is, Life. Bad things do happen to good people and good things happen to bad people. However; there are some that remain positive regardless of how heartbroken they are; and I want to be one of those people. We can all focus on such tragic events to the point that we become so consumed with the bad that occurred, we begin to think our life becomes so useless to live in or that our life is over. I try to look at each day of life as a gift; everyone that we have been given the privilege to have in our life is also a gift, but it is a temporary gift from God while we are here on this earth.

Most likely the majority of us think, things that occur of tragic events are just not fair, but we still question why would God allow something so tragic to happen? I once was told we should never question God but to me God is my teacher and in this classroom of life, if we don’t completely understand, we raise our hand for better understanding. We may not always get a clear and concise answer but I truly believe God will help us through our trials for better understanding from him. So to answer this question of why, well I have no earthly idea as while we are here on this earth I really do not think we are to understand everything. What I do know is God never promised us a rose garden while on this earth, but he did promise us he would never leave or forsake us as it is given to us in Hebrews 13: 5. I stopped trying to understand a long time ago; it is just not for me to understand. I do believe for every tragedy that occurs in this life, God will use it for his greater good. We personally may never know it, but for that tragic event that happens it could lead someone to Christ, bring a community together, mend a broken relationship or teach someone what it means to pray without ceasing.

There is a time for everything, our hearts and spirits will be broken in this life, but God is the ultimate healer. Without our heartbreaks, we will not know what happiness is. Without failures, we will not know the feel of triumph. Without tears we will not appreciate laughter. God is good and sometimes when things are taken away, he will give us something else to give us hope. What he takes away can never be replaced or forgotten in our hearts but we can choose to be consumed with the loss or be forever thankful to have had the blessing of that precious gift we once had even if it was temporary here on earth but we all know as children of God, that temporary gift in this earthly life will be there waiting in our Heavenly life.
