Of the world?

How can we live in the world, without being of the world? How far do we let our children go with the "in" thing, like body piercings, tatoos ect.?

    Hi Linda.

We have to live in the world, in a godly way. From what I understand, and this is just an example, that means: We try and be led by the Holy Spirit, so we will not fulfill the desires of the flesh. We tell the truth instead of lying, we don't steal from others, we don't sleep with other people's spouses. Paul wrote it best:

Galatians 5:16-26 NKJV "I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another."
Be led by the Spirit, and you will not "fulfill" the lust of the flesh, it doesn't say that you wouldn't want to at times, but you will not go through with it. As far as our children, as long as they live under our roof, we can have some say in what they do to themselves, but when they grow up, they are responsible for their lives - and they will often do anything except what their parent wants, so be prepared for chronic disappointment.

We all thought our parents were old fashioned, had our own music and clothes, and we felt that we knew what was actually best for us at some point. Then we replace our parents, and the children think that we are old fashioned, they have their own music and clothes, and they know what is best... and the cycle of life continues.

So in summary, once they are out of your house, they get to go as far as they want to as long as its legal. God looks on the heart, and all the things that you mentioned are outward adornments just like eye shadow, and lipstick, which caused a raucous in the church when it began, but tats and piercings won't wash off. :)
