But when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, It is a ghost! and they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid. Peter answered Him, Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water. He said, Come. So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. Matthew 14:26 ESV
The wind and waves were beating against the boat as they crossed the Sea of Galilee. It had been a long dark night and it was almost morning when an image appeared near the disciples, walking across the top of the water. It was Jesus. The disciples were terrified thinking that it was a ghost, but Jesus calmed them. Peter, who tended to speak first and think later, asked the Lord to call him out onto the water.
Jesus said, "Come", and Peter left of the safety of the boat, stepped out on the water, and started walking towards Jesus. When Peter saw the wind and waves around him, he took his eyes off of Jesus, became scared and started to sink. Peter panicked, cried out and Jesus took hold of him and they got back into the boat together. Jesus only asked him: Why did you doubt?
Peter asked the Lord for an opportunity, he got it, and it was scary. Many of us have prayed and thought later in a passionate moment of prayer and then cry out in fear when it came to pass. During a fast once, I prayed for the Lord to remove anything that was holding me back from Him. I had no idea that it was my job, and I was soon on unemployment. He saw me through it and I did become closer to Him, but it was not pleasant.
We will have to leave the safety of the boat and our comfort zone to get the best that He has for us. Most will ignore this call just as the eleven stayed in the boat, but a crazy few will step out on the water and risk it all. Will you step out with nothing but faith to support you? It will be scary. Jesus still seeks those who will walk on the water when He calls them.
Prayer: Lord guide me into all that you have for me. Place me where I need to be. Reveal the gifts that You have placed in my life and give me a clear vision of Your plan, in Jesus name.
