Rebuilding the Wall

  • However you are just in all that is come on us; for you have dealt truly, but we have done wickedly; neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept your law, nor listened to your commandments and your testimonies with which you did testify against them. For they have not served you in their kingdom, and in your great goodness that you gave them, and in the large and fat land which you gave before them, neither turned they from their wicked works. (Nehemiah 9:33 WEB).

Nehemiah grew up in the real school of hard knocks. He was a servant living as an exile in a foreign land. The capital city of his country and the home of his fathers lay burned and looted, Jerusalem. It was a very dark time for his nation and all appeared hopeless, especially for one man to tackle.

But just as Esther was put in a position of influence for such a time as this (Esther 4:14), Nehemiah was placed as the cupbearer to the king of the land. Nehemiah was deeply moved for Jerusalem and begged God to give him favor: Lord, I beg you, let now your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants, who delight to fear your name; and please prosper your servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. (Nehemiah 1:11).

His prayer was answered. The king took notice and told Nehemiah to return and rebuild the wall of his city, and even provided the materials for it. He was in the right position, had the influence, and was given favor to accomplish that task. It was a bad job that no one else wanted. It was dangerous and under constant threat and ridicule. When they began rebuilding the wall, one had to work and one had to hold a spear waiting for the impending attack, but in a record 52 days, the wall around Jerusalem was completed and everyone knew that it was God.

Nehemiah and those with him acknowledged that their fathers had messed up. They had been rebellious and not followed the Lord, then their country was overrun and they were all taken away into exile. They repented, they fasted, they worshipped and sought God earnestly.

Nehemiah prayed and reminded God of His own words to Moses: Remember, I beg you, the word that you commanded your servant Moses, saying, If you trespass, I will scatter you abroad among the peoples: but if you return to me, and keep my commandments and do them, though your outcasts were in the uttermost part of the heavens, yet will I gather them from there, and will bring them to the place that I have chosen, to cause my name to dwell there. (Nehemiah 1:79).

He and all those who were with him wrote a covenant and sealed it" Now those who sealed were: Nehemiah the governor, the son of Hacaliah, and Zedekiah, (Nehemiah 10:1). God blessed them, restored them, protected them and they completed their work.

For such a time as this we live. Nehemiah lived in a time when his fathers had dropped the ball and destroyed their nation, but he manned up, took a stand and said, "not on my watch". He reversed the damage done by his fathers. He rebuilt the wall that had been torn down. Each of us are put here and connecting with God is what gives our life true meaning and purpose. Let us follow the example of Nehemiah and take a stand for God, even when everyone else has forsaken Him.

Prayer: Father I thank You for today, for where I am, and for all that You have blessed me with. You are an Awesome God and there is none like You. I get excited at the things that You do. Show Your power in my life. Lead me, teach me and help me take a stand for you, in the name of Jesus I pray.

David and Dianna Wyles
David and Dianna Wyles Maybe I'm a coward... Prayers like this one can give me anxiety about what I'm truly asking to get myself into. I want to be Gods hands and feet but I struggle with following him into battle so to speak. I have been placed in a few battle zones and I think I must have a few scars unhealed that I am only barely aware of / haven't fully realized what they are exactly...Father please take away these fears and give me strength, heal whatever it is that is causing me to panic about following you no matter what...maybe I fear loss... I have lost so much it seems... yet I do have faith and I do want to be your hands and feet. I want to make a difference to people and help them see your love Lord. Take away the fear that paralizes me and sends me into panic attacks. Keep my family safe and healthy for me. Lift me gently up so I can breath you in again.... if I say I want to be brave, you might give me something I have to be brave about again and I fear that! Take away these deamon fears PLEASE!!!! I ask this in the name of your son Jesus ~Amen~ Thank you Pastor Dion, this was a very powerful message for me today. Blessings to you.

Jim Jarrell
Jim Jarrell Dear Dianna, the apostle Paul says that he carried the marks of Jesus on his body, but that he was able to count it all joy. he also said that he had learned that all things work for good for those who love God and are call according to His purpose. I believe that as you let go of this fear, and you will, you will begin to see not only why these things have happened, but how you grew from them.

David and Dianna Wyles
David and Dianna Wyles Strangely, I knew in the middle of these recent battles God walked with me and even carried me through parts AND I saw all my blessings in the middle of those storms of life and I saw him bring us back and start the healing... but the battle... I fear for my family. I know and reason with myselfGod is for us. I know I grew from the struggles. Yet I still feel paralized with fear of losing someone else close to me or the battles my own children must go through. It is not easy watching your grown daughter reduced to a phychosis and anxiety ridden 5 year old child again not able to cope with any of daily life. God delivered us from the harshness of that but she still battles fear and anxiety, can't get a job because of her anxiety and inability to manage an interview now. Don't get me wrong... I am forever greatful God brought her back to reality, but the struggle is real and all I can do is pray and watch. I can still count all my blessings as I know I have many. I would just like to shake the lies of the devil out of my head. Thanks so much for your encouraging words. Blessings to you

Kay Rushin
Kay Rushin Dianna, you made me laugh out loud, so that's  courage at it's finest when we can admit things. I know for sure, he doesn't give us things we can't handle. That is one of his promises. In the Bible, courage is also called “good cheer” as in Mark 6:50 when Jesus gave the command to the disciples who saw Him walking on the water of the Sea of Galilee and coming toward them. The Greek word translated “courage” and “good cheer” means literally “boldness and confidence.” In the Bible, courage is the opposite of fear. When God commands us to fear not, to be of good cheer, and to have courage, He is always commanding against fear, which is the opposite of courage. I do believe you have boldness and confidence.

David and Dianna Wyles
David and Dianna Wyles Well at least I made you laugh!! :) I know on many levels and remind people often that same quote... God doesn't give us more than we can handle and I hold fast to the promise of a hope and a future promised in Jeremiah 29:11 apparently I am needing to work on my "be of good cheer" I dont feel bold I feel broken and frail. I dont feel up to any more battles like the last 2 years. Sometimes when I pray to be brave I wonder what I am praying to get myself into. What I will have to be brave about to prove to me I am brave... does that make since?? Last time I prayed to be brave I lost my sister to cancer and my daughter went insaine at the same time (do to stress and the fear of losing her Aunt to cancer. It was over 6 months & 3 mental hospitals that I had to be brave and watch my daughter struggle with reality and a year I had to watch my sister wither to nothingness. I realize I am not the only one with theses issues... we all lose people we love and many struggle with mental illness and yet I still fear  the what's next. I am working throug it though. Thanks so much for you encouraging words. Blessings :)

Deleted Member Dianna, I surely understand where you are coming from. If I didn't know better, I would say we sure think and feel the same way about so many things. I too, always want to do and be what Jesus wants be too, but sometimes, I do fear what might be ahead. I am a person that likes things to kind of be in order and the not knowing sometimes, put fear in me too and causing panic attacks. But I, like you have a few battle scars and I definitely think that can affect our thinking of what we might have to face. But over the years I have looked back on all the battles and things that I have been through and not one time did Jesus leave me alone. I may have felt then, like He was a million miles away, but He was right there and so many times I look back, when satan tries to throw fear and me and say satan you couldn't touch me then and you can't touch me now. I believe there is a hedge and shield about us that will protect us and our family that we love so much, because this was always one of the things satan would fight me the hardest about, like he was going to let something happening to my family, my husband or my children, or my grandchild, but Jesus came so calmly and peacefully to me one day and I felt Him sweep over my soul and say my child, your husband and children are in My Hands and I am going to take care of them and Praise The Lord, through good and bad, Jesus has always took care of them. Love and prayers sent to you. Love, Tamara

David and Dianna Wyles
David and Dianna Wyles I have never felt like God was gone from me...I do believe he carries me through much of life and all of our struggles. but I do fear what might be ahead... I too like things in order and not knowing is fear inflicting for sure, honestly feel like I have been having demon attacks in my sleep, I have been waking up all paniced and not sure why... just keep feeling "what have I gotten myself into by praying for bravery, what test of faith is coming next and please dont let it harm my family!" I saw in the middle of our last battles that God carried us and yet it was a LONG 2 years. We are still healing. Each day I would see blessings from God and knew they were messages of encouragement... and I still fear!!! I dont know why and it's so frustrating!! Recently all those beatuiful heart messages I see have become " What are you building me up for now?" instead of blessings they were ment to be. I want to believe there is a hedge around us protecting us but our recent losses make that difficult to feel. THE LORD IS GOOD THOUGH AND HE BRINGS ME HERE SO I CAN FIND ENCOURAGEMENT AND GOOD PEOPLE TO HELP ME REASON THROUGH ALL THE GARBAGE THE DEVIL THROWS AT ME.  Thank you for your kind words and encouragement. I feel a little better this morning :) Many blessings to you :)

Cheryl Hepler Hi Dianna,  sorry for your loses & scars.  I agree more battle isn't something desiring to be in again.  Healing took me a l o n g time.  I can get triggers & panic attacks I know of.  Feel like your going to die.  A girl singer I like named Madisa, has a song called "Scars".  She writes with depth.  Very healing and you know God here's you.  Blessings

Carol Pady Amen! Now is not the time for silence. As God's children we must speak to our representatives and convict them of the grievous sins they have committed against God. We must bring God back into our government, our schools and most importantly our homes, so He will heal this land!

Kathy Banfield
Kathy Banfield AMEN! My ex hubby is into Greek mythology (I told him it's called "MYTHOLOGY" for a reason!) and I am amzed that anyone in their right mind would prefer to worship a mere idol, or lesser god, instead of the one true God! It just doesn't make sense. And the world seemed no different in ancient times than it does now, when we all tend to worship various gods instead to turning to the only one true God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob---and ME! Thanks again for these words of wisdom; this wil,. probably be the last devotional I read before my surgery tomorrow morning. May God continue blessing you, Pastor Todd, and your ministry!
