For you will light my lamp, Yahweh. My God will light up my darkness. For by you, I advance through a troop. By my God, I leap over a wall. As for God, his way is perfect. Yahweh's word is tried. He is a shield to all those who take refuge in him. Psalm 18:28-30 WEB.
Total darkness is the complete absence of light. In scripture, it is associated with gloom, despair, and terror in addition to the natural meaning of no light. When you remove all light, what you are left with is darkness. The human eye cannot distinguish color when it grows dark, and as the light fades, colors become gray and eventually black.
One of the curses on Egypt during the exodus was a darkness that could be felt. It was an oppressing, heavy, thick darkness. No one even moved out of their spot for three days, but there was light in the houses of God's people (Exodus 10:22). This darkness was the complete absence of light.
"Let there be light" was one of the first things that God did in Genesis (1:3). Jesus told the people: "I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life" (John 8:12).
Life is fragile. As people, we like to think that we have it all under control. But I have been on top of the world one day and crushed under it the next. One phone call and darkness like this can settle over us, one that can be felt. The light of God's presence will chase away the darkness, just as turning on a light in a dark room. When the Lord lights your lamp, the darkness will swiftly flee.
If your life is in a dark place today, look to the Lord Jesus. Talk to Him. When you cannot seem to move, it is He who will bring the light into the darkness. He will meet you right where you are. His light can drive away that darkness and restore color to your world. Jesus is the answer.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I look to You today. Please bring Your light into my life and chase away the darkness. Fill me with Your presence, restore my hope, and give me a fresh vision for my life. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen!
