And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, Where are you? Genesis 3:8-9 ESV
Adam walked with God in the garden but then after disobeying His command, withdrew and tried to hide because of it. Sin brings with it a natural tendency to cover up our mistake and to hide from the presence of God. Darkness flees from the light. Like a cat in a litter box, we try and cover our mess.
I find it comforting that the Almighty God, Creator of heaven and earth, asked Adam “Where are you?” instead of pointing directly at him. God knew where Adam was better than Adam did, but He just called to him and waited for Adam to respond. God gave Adam space but called for him from a distance. He could just have easily struck Adam with a lightning bolt.
If you walk away, God will always be calling for you. You can run, but you can’t hide from the presence of the Lord. The mistakes that you have made, He already knows about and there is nothing to hide. Jesus has already paid for YOUR sin, even the ones in your future and with a simple prayer, you can have a clean slate and be washed as white as snow. Don’t try to cover your mistakes. His strength is made perfect in our weakness (2 Cor 12:9). Be real. Be you.
