One Step at a Time

By faith, Abraham, when he was called, obeyed to go out to the place which he was to receive for an inheritance. He went out, not knowing where he went. By faith, he lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a land not his own, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise. Hebrews 11:8-9 WEB.

In Genesis 12:1, the Lord told Abram to leave his father's house, relatives, and country and travel to a strange land that He would show him. Then it simply reads, "So Abram went as the Lord had told him." Take a moment and think about that. What an incredible leap of faith it was for Abram to leave his country and his family without first even knowing where he was going.

At this point, God hadn't done anything for Abram except to tell him to leave his home. Yet, he stayed positive, wholly convinced that God was able to do what He had told him. Abram believed the Lord. He didn't have to leave his country at all if he had chosen not to. He made a deliberate choice to do what God told him, and now we read about Abraham, the father of nations. If Abram had chosen not to go, then God would have used someone else. We might be reading about someone named Mathias, the father of nations, instead.

Only the first step of God's plan was revealed to Abram: "leave this place." Then after Abram obeyed the first step, God gave him the next one. Abram walked with God one step at a time, often not understanding why or where. When God tested Abram by asking him to sacrifice his son Issac, don't you think he wondered why? I would have. Abram overcame because He trusted God. That is the very essence of faith. You take the first step He shows you, then you trust Him to take care of the rest.

Many times in my life, I didn't understand what the Lord was doing or why. For He doesn't show us the end from the beginning. It comes one step at a time, so don't try to look too many moves ahead. Instead, focus on the next one. Often, I just had to take that next step and trust that the problem would work itself out, and it did, time after time.

If you hold onto the things God has told you and merely walk through the doors that He opens, things are going to work out. Though it seems to be a narrow path lined with thorns, He has cleared the way in front of you. So stop looking to the left or the right, and focus on knowing Jesus. Trust Him, and don't let fear and unbelief hold you back. You don't have to understand where this is going or why, for He does.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I thank You for taking care of me. I know that You can see the big picture while I am limited to just today. Please draw my heart to You, and let me come to know You more deeply. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen!
