Hot Pursuit

Now the king of Syria had commanded the captains of his chariots, saying, "Don't fight with small nor great, except only with the king of Israel." When the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, they said, "It is the king of Israel!" Therefore they turned around to fight against him. But Jehoshaphat cried out, and Yahweh helped him; and God moved them to depart from him. 2 Chronicles 18:31'32 WEB.

Jehoshaphat was a god-fearing king of Judah. But he allied with evil Ahab, king of Israel, and was drawn into a battle with the Syrians. During the fight, the enemy chariot commanders were instructed to find and kill the king of Israel. When they saw Jehoshaphat in his royal attire, they assumed he was Ahab and pursued him. When Jehoshaphat looked back, there was a large group of chariots chasing him. So he cried out to the Lord, and He answered and drew the enemy away from him.

Suppose Jehoshaphat had not cried out to God. In that case, he may have died on the battlefield like King Josiah did (2 Chronicles 35:23). When the enemy turned to attack him, it was all the encouragement that Jehoshaphat needed to ask God for help. It does not record what he said, but it probably included, "God help me!"

Sometimes we view asking for prayer as a weakness and put it off as long as possible. We try to quietly hide what is going on in our lives, most often because of pride. Jehoshaphat saw real trouble coming his way, and he was saved because he began to cry out to God in prayer.

We are all in a battle, and our strength and protection come from God Almighty. Do not wait until you are beaten down and weak to start asking God for help. When the attack begins, call for His help immediately.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I thank You for hearing my cry for help. Please protect my family and me today. Draw our hearts closer to You, and fulfill Your perfect will in our life. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen!
