When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, "It's a ghost!" and they cried out for fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, "Cheer up! It is I! Don't be afraid." Peter answered him and said, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters." He said, "Come!" Peter stepped down from the boat, and walked on the waters to come to Jesus. Matthew 14:26'29 WEB.
The wind and waves beat against the boat as the disciples crossed the Sea of Galilee. It had been a long night, and it was almost morning. Then an image appeared near the disciples walking across the top of the water. It was the Lord Jesus. The disciples were terrified and thought it was a ghost, but Jesus calmed them down.
Then Peter, who tended to speak first and think later, asked Lord Jesus to call him out onto the water. So Jesus said, "Come," and Peter left the boat's safety, stepped out on the water, and started walking towards Jesus.
When Peter saw the wind and waves becoming rough around him, he took his eyes off Jesus for a moment. Then he became scared and immediately started to sink into the water like the rock he was named after. Peter panicked, and he cried out for help. So Jesus grabbed him, and they walked back to the boat together. Then Jesus asked Peter one question: "Why did you doubt?"
Peter asked the Lord for an opportunity, and he got it, but then it became scary. Many of us ask for things in a passionate moment of prayer, then later cry out in fear when it actually comes to pass. It may be greater and more turbulent than we thought.
Once while I was fasting, I prayed for the Lord to remove anything that was holding me back from being closer to Him. I had no idea it was my job, and soon I was standing in the unemployment line. Yet, He saw me through that season, and by God, I did become a lot closer to Him. I had to learn to trust Him to take care of me, and it wasn't pleasant for my flesh.
We have to be willing to leave the safety of the boat, and our comfort zone, to get the best that He has for us. Most will ignore His call just as the eleven other apostles stayed in the boat. Yet, there are a crazy few who will step out on the water and risk it all. Will you step out with nothing but faith to support you? Though it may be scary, Jesus still seeks those who will walk on water when He calls them.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, please guide me into all that You have for me. Place me where I need to be, and reveal the gifts You have placed in my life. Give me a clear vision of Your plan, and let me be a part of it. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen!
