The Sound of Music

  • And they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up. And the herald proclaimed aloud, You are commanded, O peoples, nations, and languages, that when you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, you are to fall down and worship the golden image that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up. Dan. 3:3-5 ESV

The Hebrews stood before a giant golden idol that was ninety feet high and were commanded to bow down and worship it when the music played. It was a direct violation of God’s law to do this, but everyone seemed to be doing it. The three Hebrews refused and God delivered them, but thousands of others bowed to the idol. It is interesting that they were only required to bow to this golden image when the music played. Ninety-nine percent of the time it was not required and their life went on as normal.

Have you ever had something that only popped up at certain times in your life and you felt almost powerless against it? You were so certain, once again, that you had beaten this and put it behind you. Then the music played, and you did it again… It is like the enemy has a small music box in our pocket that he can open, and something dark drops over us. There is hope, if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed (John 8:36). Jesus brings light into the darkness.

It is simply a pop test: “Are they ready for the next level? Not yet…” God understands this and is patient with us. It is just a test. When you stumble, get up, repent, and move on, again. Don’t give up on God. Don’t give up on life. One day God will set you free from this and when the music plays nothing will happen, but until then, you must get up and keep going.
