Psalm 91:5-6: You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, not the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.
The Lord is pretty clear here about His protection. There is really nothing He leaves out. We have protection at night, and in darkness, in the day, and further at midday. So we know that when it comes to fear the time of day has no control over us. What are we protected from? We have protection from the terror of night, and I believe the Lord is referring to fear of the unknown or things we cannot see. Some may call those evil spirits which come out in the darkness of night. The arrow that flies by day. When we declare the promises of our Father then we can walk boldly in any place at any time with the full confidence and knowledge of this verse. When I read this verse and meditate on it, I cannot help but recall the story of “Band of Brothers”. This was based on the stories of Easy company, paratroopers from the 101st Airborne in the European theater of World War II. The particular scene that I remember is when the group is pinned down in a city and under heavy fire from the enemy. All at once the Lt. stands up and walks down the middle of the street leading his troops in a victory. There were so many bullets flying his way, but not one of them so much as grazed him. This was based on a true story and the Lt. lived all the way through the war and died in the late 1990’s in his home in Pennsylvania.
What I remember about this scene is that the others were shocked when seeing that he could walk right down the middle exposed and armed with nothing more than light weapons. They grew in confidence and followed him, knowing that he was not afraid.
That is what we have in this promise. We must understand that when we have God on our side, there is nothing that can come against us. There may be shots fired in our direction, and reports of sickness all around us, but we will not fear anymore! The news outlets, and gossips will always find something to try and make you feel less secure in this world, and stay glued to your TV, and dependent on the government for protection. But when we rely on the promise of our Father, we can walk boldly into any situation.
I would not suggest purposely putting yourself in harms way. I am certainly not advocating for that, but if you find yourself in a tough spot, just remember that God has you. You will not fear the terror of night, the arrow that flies by day, the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, or the plague that destroys at midday. Nothing will get to you when you see God bigger than that which threatens fear. Pestilence is another name for a deadly virus, a plague at midday would effect your crops or more directly your work. The arrow that flies by day could be gun violence, and the terror at night we all have probably faced at one time or another in our lives. These are as relevant today as they were in David’s time. These are all issues that we face in this country, and in this world. As long as we have this promise, and we have Jesus, we will not fear. Take heart brothers and sisters and see this promise bring courage, boldness, and especially praise for our Father in heaven who loves you and protects you in all situations.
