1 Corinthians 7:20-24: Each one should remain in the situation which he was in when God called him. Were you a slave when you were called? Don’t let it trouble you—although if you can gain your freedom, do so. For he who was a slave when he was called by the Lord is the Lord’s freedman; similarly, he who was a free man when he was called is Christ’s slave. You were bought at a price; do no become slaves of men. Brothers, each man, as responsible to God, should remain in the situation God called him to.
Be free! We have all been bought at a price. If you are struggling with something in your life. If you are a slave to addiction, fear, sickness, unbelief, whatever it is, you must know we are free! If God called you when you were still in those chains, do not fear. The Lord has accepted you and regardless of whether you ever break free from that slavery, you belong to Him and your salvation is secure.
What the Holy Spirit is teaching us here is that if you can lay down that which holds you in bondage, then do it! Be free in Jesus. Do not let the chains bind you. You have the salvation of the world to cut those chains, use those hands to be free! When the son sets you free, you are free indeed ( John 8:36 ).
We have a really rambunctious dog at our house, her name is Gracie. She is mostly an indoor dog, and so we keep her in the backyard and in the house, but we are concerned that if she gets outside of the backyard, that she would be difficult to catch. There we so many times that I would come home and open the garage door not knowing that she was in there with an open door to the outside. She had no clue that she was free, she could have run all over the neighborhood, but she didn’t know any better. She just ran in the back yard. We are not Gracie’s captures, she is our wonderful pet, and we love her.
The point is that we can be trapped in ourselves, not knowing the door is wide open. The same is true for us. The door opens for us wide to walk through and be free. We have been bought at a price. We have Jesus now, and we are nobody’s slave. Walk through the door brothers and sister and be free. Shake off the chains and be liberated in Jesus Christ. If you must be a slave to something, trade it for Jesus and be a slave to Him. Desire Jesus, be with Jesus, be led by and held by Jesus. He is our all and all. When He sets you free, you are free indeed!
