He entered into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little from the land. He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." Simon answered him, "Master, we worked all night and caught nothing; but at your word I will let down the net." When they had done this, they caught a great multitude of fish, and their net was breaking. Luke 5:3–6 WEB.
After fishing all night long, they had caught nothing. Peter, James, and his brother John had given up and were washing their nets when Jesus came down to the water's edge. He asked if He could use one of their boats as a pulpit to teach from. There were so many people crowding around Him on the beach that He needed some space. So Peter pushed away from the shore and allowed Jesus to use his boat as a platform.
Nothing you do for God goes unnoticed or without a reward. When Jesus was done teaching, He wanted to reward them for using the boat. So He told Peter to let down the net again. Peter told Jesus they had fished all night and caught nothing, "but at Your word," we will let down the net. I am sure that Peter was skeptical. After all, Peter was a professional fisherman, and here was a carpenter telling him what to do with his net. Yet when Peter did what Jesus told him, they caught more fish than their boats could hold.
Sometimes God calls us to do something that we have already done and failed at before. But there is a vast difference when He is in the boat with us. His grace makes all things possible, and you can do all things through Christ when He strengthens you (Philippians 4:13).
If you feel God asking you to do something, but you have already been there and done that, be open to the idea. Even though you have toiled all night and caught nothing, at His word, if you will let down the nets again and trust Him, He will fill it to overflowing. For all things are possible with God.
