The Pottery Maker

Then I went down to the potter's house, and behold, he was making something on the wheels. When the vessel that he made of the clay was marred in the hand of the potter, he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it. Then Yahweh's word came to me, saying, "House of Israel, can't I do with you as this potter?" Jeremiah 18:3-6 WEB.

A friend of mine owned a potter's wheel and loved to craft things. She would take a simple lump of clay and turn it into something beautiful. If the piece she was making didn't turn out right, she would take it back to the wheel and add a little more water. In a few minutes, she would spin something new out of that mess of clay.

She would shape the clay into plates and bowls, then hand paint and glaze them. When satisfied with them, she would dry them in a furnace. I was always amazed at how beautiful the pottery pieces were when they came out of the kiln.

Many of us have become wrecked works of art. We start with so much potential and promise, but all of that can become broken. The dreams that we once had can be shattered into a million pieces. What was once beautiful can become dark despair. You might begin to wonder why you should get out of bed at all.

Know today that the Lord can put you back together. No matter what your life looks like now, there is still hope. He has a future for you better than you ever expected was possible. Yet, when the furnace comes on, don't panic. It is just part of the process. I have watched God take my broken life and slowly put it back together. He will do the same for you.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, please mold me into what You think is best, for I know that You are always right. You can see the big picture of time, whereas I can only see what has already passed. Lead me, and I will follow. Fix me, Lord. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen!
