Now on the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink! He who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, from within him will flow rivers of living water." But he said this about the Spirit, which those believing in him were to receive. John 7:37–39 WEB.
It gets really hot here in South Carolina during late summer. The air conditioners often struggle to keep our data center cool enough, especially during heat waves. The combination of heat and high humidity makes the air seem thick, taking on a bluish tint. During most of the year, we aren't the best at drinking the proper amount of water. Yet, there is nothing quite as refreshing and life-giving as a cold glass of water on a hot summer day. It can literally give us chills.
The Lord has promised to give living water to the thirsty, to those who seek Him more than anything else. There is no substitute for the presence of the Lord. He is refreshing, and His living water will flow through us and splash on those around us. A psalmist wrote:
"As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants after you, God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God." (Psalms 42:1-2) WEB.
God's living water is for the thirsty. It's not for the preachers, the priests, the praise team, or the theologians unless they are thirsty. You've got to want more of His presence in your life. Intense heat will make you thirsty. Sometimes the things that make us go "woe is me" make us thirsty for more of Him.
When your back is to the wall, there is no substitute for the presence of the Lord. So be thankful when God allows you to lean on Him, to have your thirst quenched by His living water. You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your living water. I so thirst for more of Your presence and pray that You fill me with Your Holy Spirit today. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen!
